Coil coating is the most used aluminum coating process in the heavy industry: a method by which a metal coil is coated in a continuous process prior to fabrication. This treatment originates from the concept according to which it is much more effective and economical to degrease, chemically pre-treat and lacquer a continuous flat surface rather than an irregularly shaped semi-finished product. Coil coating process aims to give the sheet greater resistance to atmospheric agents, greater flexibility, particular impact resistance or a more attractive appearance. This process can be summarized in three main stages: pretreatment, application of the organic coating, drying of coatings. The two coatings used for this process are: liquid paints and powder coatings.
Coil coating: advantages of this aluminum coating process
There are many reasons why coil coating is particularly interesting and convenient as an aluminum coating process:
- Constant quality of results throughout the coating process
- Higher productivity in a short time
- Reduction of environmental emissions thanks to the possibility of carrying out the entire coating process in a single production site
The laminate coated through the coil coating process takes the name of prepainted. Generally, the markets in which prepainted metal laminates are most used are the packaging, household appliance and transport sectors.
